Benefits of Yoga

At Bliss Yoga & Fitness, our Yoga classes vary from gentle and accommodating to strenuous and challenging; the choice of style is up to you and based on your physical ability and personal preference. Whichever type you choose, the benefits are many.  This 5,000 year old practice is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and Modern Western Medicine studies are proving a growing list of benefits to the practice of Yoga:

-Less Stress/More Calm.  Yoga calms the Stress Response which has shown to have devastating effects on the body.  A reduced stress response in turn decreases physiological arousal — for example, reducing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and easing respiration. Yoga has also been linked to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and a better immune system function.

- Relaxation techniques incorporated in Yoga can lessen chronic pain such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome.  Harvard Medical School is now looking at the benefits of yoga in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as the benefits for those who suffer from Depression and Anxiety.

- Strike a Pose for Strength.  The poses (asanas) of Yoga help build strength and tone of muscles, and nearly all poses build core strength in the deep abdominal muscles.

- Yoga for Flexibility.  Yoga poses work by stretching your muscles that in turn help you move better and feel less stiff or tired.

- Breathing Benefits.  Through attention to respiration and breath work performed throughout yoga practice, may enjoy improved respiration, energy and vitality.

- Better Posture From Yoga. When you're stronger and more flexible and more aware of your body in space, your posture improves.

The list goes on to include the maintenance of a balanced metabolism, weight reduction, cardio and circulatory health, improved athletic performance, and protection from injury.
